If you’ve seen my viral “homemade High Fibre Mixed Berry Chia Jam made for Gut Health, you’ll know chia seeds are one of my favourite easy additions to meals.
These tiny seeds might look unassuming, but they pack a nutritional punch, particularly when it comes to fibre, plant variety and supporting regular bowel habits.
And the best part? You don’t need to eat them by the spoonful.
One of my favourite ways to use them is in this simple Mixed Berry Chia Jam, which turns a few basic ingredients into an easy addition to breakfast or snacks.

Why are chia seeds so good for your gut?
1. They’re packed with fibre
Chia seeds are particularly rich in dietary fibre. Fibre helps add bulk to stools and supports normal bowel movements, making it an important part of a diet for digestive health.
Chia also contains soluble and gel-forming fibre. When chia seeds come into contact with liquid, they absorb water and form a gel-like consistency.
2. They can help you increase plant variety
Gut health isn’t just about one “superfood”.
A diverse diet containing a wide range of plant foods provides different types of fibre and other compounds that interact with the gut microbiome.
Chia seeds are an easy addition to help build that variety alongside foods such as berries, oats, nuts, seeds, legumes, vegetables and wholegrains.
3. They can support regularity
If you’re struggling with constipation or irregular bowel movements, increasing fibre can be one part of the nutrition picture, alongside movement, hydration and types of fibre.
However, more fibre isn’t always better.
If you suddenly jump from a low-fibre diet to adding large amounts of chia, you may experience bloating or discomfort. Increasing fibre gradually and ensuring you’re drinking enough fluid is generally a better approach.
And if constipation is ongoing, there may be other factors worth looking at too, including overall food intake, fluid, movement, medications, gut conditions and bowel habits.
If you’re experiencing ongoing gut symptoms, this is a great time to seek personalised support from a Dietitian.
A Dietitian can help you understand your symptoms, identify practical nutrition strategies and build an approach that works for you.

4. They’re an easy “add-on” food
One of my favourite nutrition strategies is adding rather than restricting.
You don’t need to completely change your diet to support your gut.
Try adding chia seeds to foods you’re already eating:
- 🥣 Stir into oats or overnight oats
- 🍓 Add to yoghurt
- 🥤 Blend into smoothies
- 🍞 Spread this chia jam onto toast
- 🥞 Add to pancakes
- 🌱 Sprinkle into cereal
- 🧁 Add to homemade muffins or bliss balls
